Sixth Transfer of Banned US Cluster Munitions Condemned by US Campaigners

The U.S. Cluster Munition Coalition is deeply dismayed by President Biden’s decision to transfer internationally prohibited cluster munitions for the sixth time in less than 15 months to Ukraine, announced September 25.

U.S. Cluster Munition Coalition Sends Letter to President Biden and his National Security team

On September 25, 2024 the U.S. Cluster Munition Coalition and 18 organizations sent a letter to President Biden expressing grave concern with current U.S. policy and practice on cluster munitions and urging immediate action. The United States' continued actions in contradiction to the principles embodied in the Convention has potentially weakened the global norm against their use. Just ten days prior to the sending of the letter, during the Twelfth Meeting of States Parties to the Convention on Cluster Munitions, this was starkly demonstrated by Lithuania’s formal declaration of its intent to denounce and withdraw from the Convention in six months’ time. The United States should be a global leader in the abolition of these indiscriminate weapons—not complicit in their use.

US Campaigners Condemn Fifth Transfer of Banned US Cluster Munitions

The US Cluster Munition Coalition (USCMC) is appalled by President Biden’s decision to again transfer internationally prohibited cluster munitions to Ukraine. The US Cluster Munition Coalition has condemned the four previous transfers of these weapons since July of 2023, and is dismayed by the need to condemn such an action for the fifth time. The US Cluster Munition Coalition urges President Biden to reject these prohibited weapons and to urgently act to align US policy and actions with requirements of the Convention on Cluster Munitions.
